This month, for the September resource round up, we’re doing something a little different. If you know our brand, you know we’re always really interested in artistic wellness. That’s why this month, instead of sharing filmmaking resources, we’re sharing free self care resources. We believe that you can only make your art if you’re feeling okay, and taking care of your mental and physical health will enable you to create the things you envision. Next month, we’ll be sharing horror filmmaking resources for spooky season, but this month, let’s take a minute to focus on taking care of the artist, not just the art.
Self care quiz
Before you begin, take this quiz to see how you’re doing in terms of self care now. You may already have a sense of this, but getting to know yourself and your habits a little better will help you up your self care game! Just remember to be gentle with yourself regardless of the results. A lot of people, especially busy people (which artists often are) forget to take care of themselves, and there’s no moral value attached to that.
Maintenance self care worksheet
Fill out this worksheet to assess where your self care practice is now, barriers you may be facing, and new strategies you might like to implement.
DBT skills worksheet packet
This worksheet packet explains and helps guide you through several DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) skills that will be helpful for your self care practice. The skills include distress tolerance, emotional regulation, improving relationships, and living in the moment.
Insight Timer
Insight Timer is my favorite free meditation app. It has guided meditations and music that can help with better sleep, reducing anxiety, and much more. With many different teachers and guides, you’re sure to find something that works for your goals.
Gentler podcast
Maya Fleming’s free podcast is full of tips and tricks for effective self care. With short, instructive episodes, there’s something for everyone. I especially like the 20 minute episode on “when self care feels like a chore.”
The Self-Care Edit
Another free podcast that centers self care, this time focusing on yoga and ayurveda.
Regulate your nervous system yoga (Yoga with Adriene)
If you’ve ever done online exercise, chances are you’ve heard of Yoga With Adriene. I personally love all of her classes, but this one, which is specifically designed to regulate your nervous system, is a short, free practice that will help you get ready for your day, unwind for bed, or get centered after a stressful event.
Brene Brown TED talk playlist
This playlist compiles a lot of Brene Brown’s wisdom, from the power of vulnerability to listening to shame to why your critics aren’t the ones who count. Take some time to work your way through the list, or find one or two videos with topics that resonate with you.
Financial Feminist podcast
They say that money can’t buy happiness, but I disagree. Money can buy you ease, relaxation, comfort, and joy. Money stress is hugely detrimental to your mental health. If you’re a filmmaker–or any artist–you also need money to make your art happen! That’s why I recommend financial expert Tori Dunlop’s podcast, Financial Feminist.
Finch self care app
I love the Finch self care app! In this adorable app, you’re tasked with caring for a little bird and sending it on adventures. The way you care for your bird is by completing self care tasks. You could use it to establish a morning routine, remind yourself to meditate, or get more sleep. You can input your own tasks, so the possibilities are endless! You can earn points to buy your pet cute clothes, home decor, and even pets of their own.
