theartge special effects makeup tutorials
The internet is full of makeup tutorials, but this youtube channel is a great place to start. Featuring everything from how to get started with SFX makeup to applying scar wax to creating a fake sunburn, this channel is full of inspiration and hot tips to get you started.
Dylan Clark’s behind the scenes videos
It’s no secret that we love Dylan Clark at New 32! Did you know that this talented horror filmmaker makes behind the scenes videos for many of his short films? Not only will you learn something from his artistry, but you’ll learn a lot from his process as he gives you a glimpse into what happens behind the camera. Great for folks who are interested in learning new skills and making low budget horror movies that look great.
Stan Winston video courses
If you’re looking for even more in depth SFX makeup tutorials, Stan Winston has an absolute treasure trove of information on his site. It’s behind a paywall, but there’s a seven day free trial, which is enough time to learn a LOT if you really buckle down. I’m especially interested in the “articulated mask making on a budget” videos.
Epidemic Sound
Epidemic Sound requires payment to access their library of royalty free sounds, but they have a free trial and a horror music section! Check out their free trial (but don’t forget to cancel once you have what you need, because this service bills annually, which is a lot of money all at once.)
Sanaa Kelley’s Instagram
Emmy nominated foley artist Sanaa Kelley provides a ton of information about foley for free on her Instagram account. If you can’t afford to license sound effects or hire a professional foley artist, you can certainly create something creepy with the information she provides on her page. Here’s a tip she gave me when I was lucky enough to interview her for the blog a while back: a baby carrot snapping sounds like a finger breaking, while celery snapping sounds like a bigger bone breaking. She’d know, she went to med school and has even performed autopsies!
The Horror Writer’s Association
The Horror Writer’s Association is a great organization for anyone who writes horror. While it does cost money to become a member, you’ll find that they host great events throughout the year that you can keep tabs on. Even if you never join, their list of their member’s books is a great place to get started if you want to read more widely in the horror genre before diving into your own screenplay. They also host the Bram Stroker awards, and keeping tabs on those winners is a great way to make sure you’re consuming really good horror on a regular basis.
Cut-Throat Women Database
This organization, which uses an inclusive definition of “women,” keeps a database of women working in horror. Check out their list of film festivals, directors, screenwriters, producers, and more to make your next horror connection when hiring for projects.
HorrorLex
Another great website, HorrorLex is a searchable database of academic writing on horror and horror-adjacent cinema. According to their site, “Professor Lex has hand-picked over 13,000 books and articles spanning a century of horror film scholarship, much of which is open access and peer-reviewed.”
Horror Queers Podcast
From our friends at Bloody Disgusting, each week our hosts walk listeners through a horror movie with “LGBTQ+ themes, a high camp quotient, or both.” Recent movies discussed include Unfriended: Dark Web, The Mummy, and The Invisable Man.
